Wadi El Rayan in el fayoum

Where is Wadi El Rayan?

Wadi El Rayan is located in the Fayoum Governorate of Egypt, about 150 kilometers southwest of Cairo (around a 2.5–3 hour drive). It lies within Egypt’s Western Desert and is part of a larger protected area known as the Wadi El Rayan Nature Reserve.

This natural wonder is nestled between rolling sand dunes, two man-made lakes, and Egypt’s only natural waterfalls — making it a rare desert-lake ecosystem.

Top Things to Do in Wadi El Rayan

Whether you’re craving adventure, nature, or just a break from city life, Wadi El Rayan offers a unique top thing to do:
1. Visit the Famous Waterfalls
The Wadi El Rayan waterfalls are Egypt's only natural waterfalls! While technically man-made (the result of lake overflow), they're a beautiful and unusual spectacle in the desert landscape — perfect for photography and a peaceful waterside rest.
2. Unwind by the Lakes
Breathe easy and soak in the serene landscapes of the Upper and Lower Lakes. The manmade lakes host migratory birds and are also a perfect spot to unwind, soak in the landscapes, or try kayaking or fishing (consult local guides for gear).
3. Sandboarding on the Dunes
Adrenaline junkie? Bring or rent a board and sandboard down the huge dunes around the area. It's one of the most popular activities in Wadi El Rayan and accessible to all.
4. Camel or Horse Riding
See the desert the traditional way! You'll often find local guides offering camel or horse rides, which are fun and picture-worthy.
5. Hike to Jabal El Modawara
A short hike up to Jabal El Modawara (a scenic hill near the lower lake) gives you sweeping panoramic views of the lakes, waterfalls, and endless desert. Perfect for a sunrise or sunset.
6. Wildlife Viewing
The reserve is home to desert animals such as the slender-horned gazelle, fennec fox, and over 39 bird species. Bring binoculars for an unobtrusive wildlife viewing experience — particularly near the lakes.
7. Under the Stars Camp
Spend the night and enjoy desert camping under one of Egypt's finest night skies. Stargazing here is an entirely different ball game! Be sure to have your own equipment or go through an organized camping tour.
